Why I Kept Attracting the Same Kind of Relationship — Until I Met Myself.

Why I Kept Attracting the Same Kind of Relationship — Until I Met Myself.

Thea Tarot 💜🩵

If you had asked me a few years ago why I kept attracting toxic people, I would have answered without hesitation:

“Because they keep finding me.”

Every relationship seemed to end the same way.

Different faces.
Different stories.
But the same pain.

I blamed them.

They were manipulative.
Emotionally unavailable.
Controlling.
Selfish.

And to be honest, some of them really were.

So I pushed them away.

I told myself I deserved better — and I did.

But no matter how many people left my life, the pattern stayed.

Where Spirituality and Psychology Meet

I love to write about the place where spirituality and psychology meet.

Not because I have all the answers, but because I’m still learning — and maybe my journey will help someone else feel a little less alone.

For a long time, I believed the lesson was about finding better people.

Now I think the lesson was about finding myself.

One day, I asked myself a question that made me uncomfortable:

“Why do I keep ending up in the same kind of relationship?”

Not because I caused their behaviour.
Not because I deserved it.
But because there was something inside me that these relationships kept touching.

Our Nervous System Remembers

Psychology helped me understand something I had never thought about before:

Our nervous system remembers.

When you’ve experienced emotional pain, rejection, unpredictability, or the feeling that love has to be earned, your nervous system learns to protect you.

It reacts long before your logical mind has time to think.

It has a mind of its own.

Looking back, I realised I wasn’t only attracted to toxic people.

I was attracted to what felt familiar.

That was painful to admit.

Painful Relationships as Mirrors

As a spiritual person, I often hear people say:

“Everything happens for a reason.”

I don’t believe that means every painful relationship was meant to happen.

But I do believe every painful experience gives us the opportunity to discover something about ourselves.

The people I called toxic became mirrors.

Not because they reflected who I was.
But because they reflected what I still believed about myself.

That I had to prove my worth.
That I had to fix people.
That if I loved hard enough, they would finally choose me.

Those beliefs didn’t come from those relationships.

They were already inside me.

The relationships simply exposed them.

A Mirror Is Not an Excuse to Stay

That doesn’t excuse unhealthy behaviour.

If someone manipulates you, lies to you, or crosses your boundaries, that is still their responsibility.

A mirror is not an excuse to stay.

Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is leave.

But leaving the relationship isn’t always enough if you keep carrying the same wounds into the next one.

Real healing started when I stopped asking:

“Why do I always attract toxic people?”

And started asking:

“What inside me still feels familiar with this kind of love?”

That question changed everything.

Healing the Relationship With Myself

I still believe in intuition.

I still believe in spiritual guidance.

But I also believe healing happens in our minds, our bodies, and our nervous system — not only in our soul.

For me, spirituality without self-reflection becomes avoidance.

Psychology without deeper meaning can feel incomplete.

Together, they helped me understand that the biggest mirror wasn’t the people I kept attracting.

It was the version of myself that believed this was the love I deserved.

Healing began the moment I stopped trying to change the people I attracted…

And started changing the relationship I had with myself.

I hope these words resonated with you, and I can’t wait to share more with you soon.

Until next time. ✨

Love and blessings.
